Julia Steers is currently the Nairobi bureau chief for VICE News. Previously, she was a correspondent for VICE News and for the Wall Street Journal, based in East Africa, and a freelance reporter. Julia’s freelance work was feature in a range of outlets, including: Vice News Tonight, France24, and CNN International. Her print work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, TIME Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Quartz, Vice News, Al Jazeera, The Independent UK, The Times, and Foreign Policy magazine. Previously, she worked as the director of social media and as a broadcast producer at CBS News. 

Prior to joining CBS News, Julia spent several years at The Huffington Post.

She completed her undergraduate studies in International Relations & Government at Georgetown University and speaks fluent French and conversational Arabic. Julia covers east and central Africa with a focus on politics, human rights, and the impact of conflict. Most recently she has covered revolution in Sudan, war in Ethiopia, drug trafficking in E Africa, and Russian influence in the Central African Republic. She primarily covers Somalia, Kenya, DR Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Central African Republic, South Sudan, and Sudan. She is based in Kenya.
